SMS verification for ChatGPT: why virtual numbers get rejected and how to choose a service
OpenAI refuses VoIP and most virtual numbers, and free public SMS sites hand the same numbers to everyone, so both often fail. When choosing a service, first check for a physical SIM number in a supported country, then how long it lasts and what happens if nothing arrives.
- OpenAI's Help Center says landlines, premium numbers, Google Voice and other VoIP numbers aren't supported; they're refused on submit.
- Free public SMS sites show every text to everyone and reuse numbers, so they don't suit an account you plan to keep.
- Check five things: physical SIM, supported country, validity, what happens if nothing arrives, and whether they want your login.
What SMS verification is, and when you need it
An SMS verification number is a phone number in another country that you use to receive one verification text. OpenAI only texts mobile numbers in countries it supports, so people without one turn to these numbers when Codex sign-in or a first API key asks for phone verification.
It only receives the code; nobody needs your account. You type the number into OpenAI's page yourself, the code is shown to you, and you enter it.
Why virtual numbers get rejected
OpenAI's Help Center says phone verification doesn't support landlines, premium numbers, Google Voice or other VoIP numbers. Many "virtual numbers" sold for verification are exactly that kind of internet number and are refused as soon as you submit them.
Free public SMS sites add more problems: each number is shared with everyone, has usually verified other accounts already, and every text it gets is posted on a public page, your code included.
Even with the right kind of number, delivery isn't always reliable: some numbers in a country receive OpenAI's texts and some don't. That's why what happens when nothing arrives matters as much as the number type.

Five things to check
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Physical SIM or VoIP | VoIP and most virtual numbers are refused outright. |
| Country | It must be one OpenAI supports; US +1 is the most common. |
| One-time or valid for a while | Codex may ask again on a new device; you can only answer if the number is still yours. |
| What if nothing arrives | Can you swap the number for free, and get a refund if swaps don't help? |
| Do they want your login | A real verification number only needs you to enter it; never share your password. |
One-time numbers versus rented numbers
A one-time number receives one text and is passed to someone else. It's cheap, but if the same account later asks for that number again, you can't get the code.
A rented number is yours for a period, and every text in that time is shown to you. It costs a bit more, but when Codex asks again after a new computer or network, the number is still there. For a ChatGPT or Codex account you'll keep, renting for a while is steadier.
How Pay2GPT's number works
Pay2GPT's Codex login number follows those five checks:
- A US +1 number on a physical SIM, not VoIP.
- $3.49 per number, valid for 21 days; every text in that time shows on your order page.
- Swap it on your order page if nothing arrives, up to 2 times per order at no charge; if no number can be assigned or none receives a text, request a refund to your original payment method.
- No sign-up: the number is assigned within seconds and emailed to you. We never need your account or password.
- One number is for one OpenAI account.
Common questions
Can a verification number get my account banned?
OpenAI hasn't published rules on this. The bigger risks are verifying many accounts with one number and using public free numbers; one number per account is safer.
Do free SMS sites work for ChatGPT?
Rarely. Their numbers are shared, often refused or used up, and the codes are public.
Why didn't my virtual number get the code?
OpenAI doesn't support VoIP and most virtual numbers, so they're refused. Use a physical SIM number in a supported country.
Does the service need my password?
No. You enter the number on the verification page yourself; the service only shows you the code.
