Who Plus is for
Plus covers what most people use ChatGPT for, such as writing, studying, research, coding help and image work. If you rarely see a usage limit message, Plus is the right plan, and paying for Pro would mostly buy headroom you don't use. Start with Plus. You can move up later.

When Pro is worth it
Pro makes sense when the limits on Plus are slowing you down every week, especially with Codex, deep research or long agent tasks. Pick by how often you hit limits rather than by the label. OpenAI sets each tier's usage and features and changes them from time to time, so check the official pricing page before buying a higher tier. Our Pro guide explains the three tiers in more detail.
Four questions to decide
- How often do you see a usage limit message? Rarely means Plus; most weeks means Pro 100.
- Do you run Codex, agents or deep research for hours, often several at once? That points to Pro 200.
- Do you need Ultrafast mode? Only Pro 500 has it.
- Do you need company invoices or seats managed by an admin? Then OpenAI's own team plans fit better than any top-up.
Switching between plans
Subscriptions don't stack. If your current plan is still running, order when it is about to end, then activate within 7 days of paying. The order isn't used up while you wait.
Changing plans doesn't touch your chats or history, because every plan is activated on the same account you already use.
