Codex usage limit reached? 3 ways to keep going
When Codex says you've hit your usage limit, your plan's Codex usage for now is used up. There are three ways to keep going; pick by how urgent it is and how often it happens.
Wait for it to reset
Your plan's Codex usage comes back on a schedule. If it can wait, let it reset and pay nothing extra.
Add Codex credits
Once you hit the limit, Codex draws from your credits, and your plan and renewal date stay the same. Credits last 12 months, from $14.90 for 250.
Move up to Pro
Pro 100 has clearly more usage than Plus, for people who hit the limit most weeks.
Credits or Pro?
If you go over now and then, say during a crunch week on one project, credits are the simplest fix. You pay once, they're used only as you need them, and your plan stays as it is. If you hit the limit most weeks or run Codex for hours at a time, Pro fits better, because far more usage comes with it every month.

How far credits go
OpenAI puts a typical GPT-5.6 Sol task at 2–15 credits, so 250 credits cover roughly 16–125 tasks. Heavier models, Fast (2×) and Ultrafast (6×) burn faster. You can check your balance in ChatGPT → Settings → Usage, or under Usage & Billing in the Codex app.

Check before you buy credits
- The account has an active ChatGPT Plus or Pro personal plan. Free, Go and Business workspace accounts can't take credits.
- Credits work in ChatGPT and Codex only. They are not OpenAI API credits.
- Under OpenAI's rules, credits can't be refunded or transferred once they're added.
