OpenAI verification code not received? Why ChatGPT and Codex texts don't arrive

When OpenAI's text never arrives, the number itself is usually the problem: an unsupported country, a VoIP or virtual number, or a number already used on another account. Next come too many resend requests and blocked texts. Read the message on the verification page first, then work through the steps below.

  • First check which code you're waiting for: an email code, a text, or an authenticator app code each fail for different reasons.
  • An error right after you submit usually means the number isn't accepted; "sent" with nothing arriving usually means delay, filtering or too many requests.
  • With a Pay2GPT US number you can swap it on your order page, and get a refund if none of your numbers receives a text.

Which code are you waiting for?

OpenAI can ask for three different codes, and each fails for its own reasons:

  • Email code: sent when you sign up or sign in with email. Check spam and promotions folders and that the address is right.
  • Text message code: sent during phone verification, most often when signing in to Codex or creating your first API key. This guide is about this one.
  • Authenticator code: only if you turned on two-step verification yourself; it lives in your authenticator app and is never texted.

OpenAI Help Center: ChatGPT supported countries

Step by step

  1. Check the country and the number: pick the right country and don't type the country code again or add a leading 0.
  2. Wait a minute or two before resending. Repeated requests can trigger a rate limit and slow the code down.
  3. Switch network or VPN node and resend; many requests from one network can also get in the way.
  4. If it's your own phone, check SMS filtering, spam and unknown-sender folders.
  5. Still nothing: try another number, ideally a physical SIM number in a supported country.
  6. If the number is fine but it keeps failing, contact OpenAI support from the Help Center with the exact message from the page.

When a verification number gets nothing

First check that you chose United States +1 on the page and that the number hasn't verified another account. Then use your Pay2GPT order page:

  • Swap: if the current number got no text, swap it for a new US number, up to 2 times per order at no charge.
  • Refund: if no number could be assigned, or none of your numbers received a text, the order page offers a refund to your original payment method.
  • Orders that received a code are not refunded; the number did its job.

Avoiding it next time

  • Use one number for one OpenAI account; don't verify account after account with the same number.
  • Skip free public SMS sites: their numbers are shared and mostly refused or used up, and anyone can read your code.
  • Settle your network before you press send instead of switching nodes between resends.
  • Keep the number you verified with. OpenAI's Help Center says you can't unlink a phone number from an existing account, so a later check needs that number again, or another supported number you control.

Common questions

How long does the ChatGPT code take?

Usually seconds to a minute or two. If several minutes pass, work through the steps above instead of pressing resend again and again.

Why does it say my number can't be used?

Usually the country isn't supported, or the number is a landline, VoIP or virtual number, which OpenAI's Help Center says it doesn't accept.

I pressed resend too many times. What now?

Wait a while before trying again, and resend from a different network.

Can I get a refund if a verification number gets nothing?

With Pay2GPT, yes. Swap the number first, up to 2 times per order; if none of your numbers gets a text, the order page offers a refund.

My email code doesn't arrive either. Same fix?

No. Check spam and promotions and the address you typed; this guide covers text message codes.
