Which phone numbers can verify ChatGPT and OpenAI? Countries, VoIP and virtual numbers

OpenAI only accepts mobile numbers from the countries and regions it supports. Numbers from places such as mainland China, Hong Kong or Russia get no text, and landlines, Google Voice and other VoIP numbers are refused everywhere.

  • Numbers from unsupported countries can't receive OpenAI's texts, wherever you are.
  • OpenAI's Help Center says landlines, premium numbers, Google Voice and other VoIP numbers aren't supported.
  • You can't unlink a number from an account yourself, so verify with a number you'll still be able to read when you need it.

Does your country's number work?

Only if your country or region is on OpenAI's supported list. Phone verification texts mobile numbers in those places only; mainland China, Hong Kong and Russia, among others, are not on it. If your country is missing from the list on the verification page, or nothing arrives, the number itself is fine; OpenAI just doesn't text it.

Signing up for ChatGPT on the web often needs only an email. Where people actually get stuck is a phone check: signing in to Codex, or creating a first API key.

How many accounts can one number verify?

OpenAI words it differently by product. For the first API key on the developer platform, the Help Center says one number can verify up to 3 accounts, and deleting an account doesn't give that back. For ChatGPT, it says a phone number can't be unlinked from an existing account, and a normally deleted account's number is removed from its systems after 30 days.

The safe rule is one number for one account. Verifying several accounts with one number can hit the limit and tends to get accounts flagged.

No supported number? Your options

To get past one Codex or ChatGPT check, a paid number is the least effort. Pay2GPT's Codex login number is a US +1 number on a physical SIM, $3.49 per number, valid for 21 days, with the code shown on your order page, swaps if nothing arrives and a refund if none of your numbers gets a text.

After verifying

  • Once the account is verified, everyday ChatGPT use doesn't need the number.
  • A new device or network may ask again; within the number's validity, open your order page to read the code.
  • To get Plus or Pro, Pay2GPT activates it on your own account after payment, with no overseas card and no phone number needed.

Common questions

Do I need a phone number to sign up for ChatGPT?

Usually not; an email is enough. A phone check comes up for Codex sign-in, a first API key, or some security checks.

Can I use a Google Voice number?

No. OpenAI's Help Center says Google Voice and other VoIP numbers aren't supported.

Can I unlink a verified number?

Not yourself. The Help Center says a number can't be unlinked from an existing account; after a normal deletion, the number is removed after 30 days.

Will a number from an unsupported country work over a VPN?

No. What matters is the number's country, not your connection; OpenAI only texts numbers in supported countries.
