What is a personal agent? ChatGPT dots explained: features, plans and limits
A personal agent is an AI assistant that stays on, remembers what you're working on and follows up on its own. ChatGPT's personal agent is called dots. It launched on September 29, 2026, and for individuals it currently comes only with Pro, and only outside the European Economic Area (EEA), the UK and Switzerland. Here is what it does, how its usage counts, how it compares with the others, and how to get it on your own account.
How a personal agent differs from a chatbot
In a chat you ask, it answers, and it stops when you close the page. A personal agent takes on something ongoing. It keeps track of progress, works out the next step when things change, and comes back to you when a decision needs your judgment. It keeps working in the cloud even when your computer is off.
OpenAI draws a clear line between the ways to use ChatGPT.
| Mode | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Chat | You want an answer, an explanation, ideas, or help drafting something in conversation |
| ChatGPT Work | You have a task to hand off, such as research, analysis or a file, now or on a schedule |
| Codex | You want to build, debug, test or review software |
| dots | Something ongoing: it watches for changes, works out next steps, follows up between conversations, and can hand tasks to Work or Codex |
What ChatGPT dots can do
You get one dot, which you can name and give a shape and colors. According to OpenAI, it can do the following.
- It has its own cloud computer and browser and runs on GPT-6 Astra. Research, files and software all run in the cloud, so it keeps going when your devices are off.
- It remembers you, using the conversation, ChatGPT memory and its own notes. It's the same dot on any device or channel.
- It's reachable almost anywhere. Use ChatGPT on the web, the desktop app or the mobile app, or add it to Slack and Microsoft Teams. You can also talk to it on a voice call in ChatGPT. It doesn't work in a mobile browser.
- It uses your apps through plugins such as Gmail, Google Drive and GitHub. Each plugin has to be connected and given permission first.
- It can use your computer. Connect one personal computer in the desktop app and it can work with that computer's files, code and apps, as long as the computer is on and the ChatGPT app is open.
- It signs in to websites for you. When a site needs a login, it sends a sign-in request and you enter your details in a separate private form, so your password never goes into the conversation. You can also select Take over and do it yourself.
- It delegates. It can run background agents, start new cloud threads, and create Work or Codex tasks.
- It asks before acting. Anything that affects your accounts or shares information goes through an automatic review, and it waits for your approval when needed.
Which plans include dots
According to OpenAI's help docs, Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 are the only individual plans with dots, and your first dot is included at no extra cost. Free, Go and Plus don't have it. OpenAI says only that access will expand to more users soon, with no date and no mention of Plus. Some launch-day coverage said only Pro 200 had dots, but OpenAI's docs list all three tiers.
Individual Pro users must be 18 or older and outside the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland. Dots are rolling out gradually, so they may take a few days to appear on an eligible account.
| Plan | Dots |
|---|---|
| Free | false |
| Go | false |
| Plus | No; use ChatGPT Work for long tasks |
| Pro 100 / 200 / 500 | Yes, first dot included |
| Business Premium | Yes, subject to workspace eligibility |
| Enterprise | Yes, off by default until an admin enables it |
How dots usage counts
According to OpenAI, dots usage works like this.
- Talking to your dot doesn't count toward your ChatGPT usage limits.
- Work it does on its own cloud computer draws on a separate allowance in your plan, with extended limits for the first month after launch. OpenAI hasn't published the size of this allowance or said whether it differs between Pro tiers.
- Work and Codex tasks it starts for you count toward those products' limits as usual. Those limits do differ by tier. Pro 200 gets more than Pro 100, and Pro 500 gets the most.
- Later you'll be able to add more dots and give a dot more speed or capacity, as paid extras. Prices haven't been announced.
- So whether Pro is enough depends mostly on how many Codex and Work tasks you let it start. One Pro 100 user on X said their dot used up a week of Codex limits in two hours, while another said they never went past 10% of their weekly usage in a month.
Pitfalls to know before you start
- Pause stops only the current main task. Stop delegated tasks separately in Activity and cancel recurring ones in Scheduled. Ending a voice call doesn't necessarily stop the work either.
- Stopping doesn't undo what's already done. OpenAI says dots can make mistakes, so check important results yourself.
- If you want to see drafts before anything goes out, say so, for example: "Draft replies for my review, but don't send them."
- Some websites block cloud browsers or ask for extra verification. You can ask your dot to use your connected computer instead.
- Dots don't open in a mobile browser. Use the ChatGPT app or a computer.
- Start with one small responsibility, correct the first result, then add more. One X user complained their dot spent a whole day failing to fix an email setting.
Personal agents compared
Several big AI companies launched personal agents in the second half of 2026, with very different entry prices and regions.
| Product | Cheapest individual access | Regions | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| dots (OpenAI) | ChatGPT Pro 100 ($100/month) | Individual Pro excludes the EEA, UK and Switzerland | Launched September 29, rolling out |
| Duet (Anthropic) | Claude Pro or Max | US only, waitlist | Research preview since October 21, separate app; background checks count toward Claude limits |
| Spark (Google) | Google AI Pro (about $20/month) | Excludes the EEA, UK, Switzerland and Nigeria | Expanded from Ultra to AI Pro in July |
| Grok Bot (xAI) | Paid tiers of The X Subscription | xAI says it is rolling out globally | Beta in August, part of The X Subscription since October |
| Muse (Meta) | Metered free tier; paid plans $20 or $100/month | US | Launched September 8 |
| Cue (Manus) | Free, invite only | Outside China; a China version is planned | Launched September 28; each agent gets its own email, phone number and wallet |
Which one to choose
To try one for the least money, look at Muse's free tier or Gemini Spark. If you already use ChatGPT and Codex every day, choose dots. Your projects, chats and Codex tasks sit in one place, so you don't have to move context around, and talking to it doesn't use your Pro limits. Claude Duet is a US-only waitlist for now, so most people can't use it yet.
How to get dots on your account
- Make sure your account is on individual Pro (Pro 100 or higher), you're 18 or older, and you're outside the EEA, the UK and Switzerland.
- Open chatgpt.com/dots in the latest ChatGPT mobile app, the desktop app or a desktop browser, and create your dot. Give it a name and choose its look.
- Connect the plugins you need from your dot's profile. To use local files, connect your computer in the desktop app.
- Hand it one small ongoing task and review the first result before adding more.
Getting Pro without a card OpenAI accepts
Dots come only with Pro. Pro 100 costs $100 a month from OpenAI and needs a card OpenAI accepts. On Pay2GPT you can pay by card, Alipay or crypto, and the plan goes on your own ChatGPT account. No password or verification code is needed.
On Pay2GPT, Pro 100 is $119/month. Subscriptions don't stack, so if Plus is still running, order when it's about to end, then activate within 7 days of paying. If activation fails, the full amount is refunded.
Pay2GPT activates the Pro plan; access to dots is up to OpenAI, which rolls it out in stages and by region. If you don't see dots right after Pro is active, OpenAI's rollout hasn't reached your account yet; check again in a few days.

Four things we promise
