Codex for Windows download: the official Microsoft Store package
Codex for Windows lives in OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop app, Microsoft Store package OpenAI.Codex, publisher OpenAI. The buttons below download that package from Microsoft's servers, with no third party in between.
- The package comes from the Microsoft Store; its file name starts with OpenAI.Codex and it is about 1 GB.
- When you double-click it, the install window says Publisher: OpenAI. If it says anything else, don't install it.
- If you used a relay or CC Switch before, switch back to the official sign-in afterwards; no reinstall needed.
Download
Most PCs take "Download for Windows"; PCs with a Snapdragon or other ARM processor take the ARM version. The file is named like OpenAI.Codex_26.1103.4239.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0.Msix.
Double-click to install
The install window shows ChatGPT and Publisher: OpenAI. Click Install. You need Windows 10 version 2004 (19041) or later.
Open ChatGPT, click Continue to sign in, sign in to your ChatGPT account in the browser, and Codex is ready in the app.
How to check the publisher is OpenAI
- The install window: it says Publisher: OpenAI. Windows refuses to install a package whose signature doesn't match.
- The file signature: right-click the package → Properties → Digital Signatures → Details → View Certificate. It is issued by Microsoft Marketplace CA, the certificate the Microsoft Store signs listed apps with. The signer's long ID is the publisher ID the Store gave OpenAI.
- After installing: run Get-AppxPackage OpenAI.Codex in PowerShell. The PublisherId is 2p2nqsd0c76g0, the same as OpenAI's apps in the Microsoft Store.
If the download or install doesn't work
- The browser says the file can't be downloaded securely: choose Keep. Microsoft's download servers use http; Windows checks the package signature when it installs.
- Nothing happens on double-click: install App Installer from the Microsoft Store, or open PowerShell in the package's folder and run Add-AppxPackage followed by the file name.
- When Microsoft can't give a download link for a while, the button switches to the Microsoft Store installer that OpenAI's own site uses. It installs the same app.
Mac
Download Codex for Mac from OpenAI's site.
Used a relay or CC Switch?
If you pointed Codex at a third-party API before, the official app keeps those settings. Copy one prompt for an AI assistant and it switches Codex back to the official ChatGPT sign-in.
Common questions
Are Codex for Windows and the ChatGPT desktop app the same app?
Yes. OpenAI's Windows desktop app is listed as ChatGPT in the Microsoft Store, package OpenAI.Codex, and Codex runs inside it.
Can I use a "Codex installer" .exe from the web?
Better not. Some third-party installers also change Codex's settings so it runs through a third-party API. Install only packages whose publisher is OpenAI.
Do I pay for Codex?
The app is free; Codex uses the allowance of your ChatGPT plan. When that runs out, add Codex credits or upgrade your plan.
