GPT-6.1 Terra: what's new, API pricing, and which ChatGPT plans get it

On October 26, 2026, OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra, a fast, efficient model for computer use, visual reasoning and natural writing. OpenAI says it matches GPT-6 Astra on its agent benchmark at one-tenth the price per token and finishes tasks over three times faster. It's rolling out now to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu in ChatGPT Work and Codex, not in regular chat, and to developers in the API as gpt-6.1-terra at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. Here's what changed, who gets it, what it costs, and when to pick it over Sol or Astra.

What GPT-6.1 Terra is

OpenAI describes GPT-6.1 Terra as “a fast, efficient model that combines detailed visual reasoning and precise computer use alongside clearer, more natural writing.” It understands what's on screen, takes action across apps, and is pitched as the model for everyday work in volume.

It succeeds GPT-5.6 Terra, which OpenAI calls a significant step up. GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra stay OpenAI's most capable models for specialized coding, research and deeper reasoning.

In ChatGPT, Terra is a model for ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI's Help Center says it isn't available in regular chat conversations.

Agents' Last Exam (professional software tasks)On par with GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth the price per token
SpeedFinishes tasks over 3× faster on average than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol
vs GPT-5.6 Terra, medium effort15 percentage points higher at about one-third the cost
vs Claude Opus 5.5, max effortOver 3× more token-efficient and a quarter of the price per token, about 9× lower cost per task
Safety ratingTreated as Critical for cybersecurity under OpenAI's Preparedness Framework, with the same safeguards as GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra

Which ChatGPT plans get GPT-6.1 Terra

OpenAI says Terra is available starting October 26 to all Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Free, Go and Business aren't named in the announcement. It's a gradual rollout, so an eligible account may take a little while to see it.

On usage, OpenAI says your allowance goes further with GPT-6.1 Terra than with GPT-5.6 Terra, and far further than with GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra. It gives no numeric cap.

Terra, Sol or Astra: which one to pick

A simple rule: start a task on Terra, and switch to Sol or Astra only when the task needs deep reasoning. On Plus, that also makes your Work and Codex allowance last much longer.

When to use each GPT-6 model, per OpenAI
ModelPick it for
GPT-6.1 TerraComputer use, reading screenshots, images and technical drawings, navigating apps, writing, and high-volume tasks where speed and allowance matter
GPT-6.1 SolIn-depth research and complex coding
GPT-6 AstraThe hardest reasoning and specialized coding, when cost and speed matter less

GPT-6.1 Terra in the API

Developers can call it as gpt-6.1-terra through the Responses API, Chat Completions and Batch. Tool calling requires the Responses API. Standard prices are $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 cached input and $5 output, down from $2 and $12 for GPT-5.6 Terra.

How to use GPT-6.1 Terra in ChatGPT

If Terra isn't in the menu yet, the rollout hasn't reached your account. Check again later.

  1. Make sure your account is on Plus or higher. Free and Go aren't on OpenAI's list.
  2. Open ChatGPT Work or Codex in ChatGPT. Terra doesn't appear in a regular chat.
  3. Choose GPT-6.1 Terra in the model menu when you start the task.
  4. Give it a task that suits it, such as filling in a form across apps, pulling numbers out of screenshots, or reviewing a technical drawing.

Get Plus without an overseas card

Terra comes with ChatGPT Plus, so you don't need Pro to use it. If you can't pay OpenAI directly because you have no card it accepts or your card keeps getting declined, Pay2GPT activates Plus on your own ChatGPT account. You pay by card, Alipay or crypto such as USDT. Pay2GPT is an independent service, not affiliated with OpenAI.

No password or verification code is needed. If the plan can't be activated, the full amount is refunded the way you paid. Plus costs $21.90 a month here.

FAQ

Is GPT-6.1 Terra free? Not in ChatGPT for now. OpenAI lists Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu. In the API it's paid per token, and the free API tier can't use it.

Can I use GPT-6.1 Terra in a normal ChatGPT chat? No. It's a model for ChatGPT Work and Codex only.

Is GPT-6.1 Terra better than GPT-6 Astra? For computer use and high-volume tasks it reaches Astra's score on OpenAI's agent benchmark for far less, and faster. For the hardest reasoning and coding, OpenAI still recommends Sol or Astra.

What's the API model name? gpt-6.1-terra.

Do I need Pro? No. Plus includes Terra in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Pro mainly gives you a larger allowance.

Four things we promise

  • No passwordWe never ask for your password or verification code. You paste the Session only on your own order page.
  • Session not stored in the databaseThe Session is used only to activate this order and is not stored in the database. Logging out of all devices in ChatGPT revokes it.
  • Full refund if it can't be activatedIf we can't activate your plan, the full amount goes back to the way you paid.
  • Lost within 30 days? Restored freeIf the plan stops working within 30 days of activation for reasons not on your side, we restore it free or refund the remaining days.

Problems caused by your own account, such as sharing or reselling it, are not covered; the Terms of Service decide. Terms of Service →
