ChatGPT Plus payment declined? Why your card fails and how to fix it
Most ChatGPT Plus declines come from your bank, not from OpenAI: the bank blocks an online or international payment, or the 3D Secure check isn't completed. The fastest fix is to switch on online and international payments in your banking app, re-enter the card details and billing address exactly as your bank has them, then retry once in a private window with ad blockers and VPN off and approve the bank's prompt. If every card fails, check that both you and your card's bank are in a country OpenAI supports; if they aren't, retrying won't help. Below are OpenAI's own fixes first, then what to do when none of them work.
What your decline most likely means
OpenAI says it usually doesn't receive detailed decline reasons from banks, so match what you see to the most likely cause:
| What you see | Most likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Declined at once, no bank prompt | Your bank blocks online or international payments, or a card detail or the billing address doesn't match | Check the details, switch on online and international payments, or call your bank |
| “Authentication required” or “3D Secure attempt failed” | The bank's 3D Secure / SCA check didn't finish | Allow pop-ups, turn off ad blockers and VPN, approve the OTP or app prompt without refreshing |
| Every card you try is declined | You or your card's bank is outside OpenAI's supported countries | Check the supported list; a card issued there, the app stores or another payment route |
| Prepaid, debit or virtual card fails | The card has online, recurring or international payments switched off, or no 3D Secure | Ask the issuer to enable them, or try a standard credit card |
| It worked before, the renewal fails | Expired card, low balance or a new security block at the bank | Update the card in Settings → Billing and check with your bank |
Fix bank blocks and 3D Secure: OpenAI's own steps
Work through these in order. Retrying the same card again and again rarely helps. After two or three declines, call your bank; it is the only side that can see why the payment was refused.
- Re-enter the card number, expiry date, CVC and billing address, including the postal code, exactly as your bank has them.
- In your banking app, switch on online, international and recurring payments for the card, and make sure the balance or credit limit covers the charge.
- Turn off ad and pop-up blockers and any VPN, allow pop-ups, and clear the browser's cache and cookies, or use a private window or another browser, device or network.
- When the bank's one-time code or app approval appears, complete it without closing or refreshing the checkout page.
- If no prompt appears or it keeps failing, ask your bank to enable 3D Secure for online and international payments, or try a different card.
Check your country and where your card was issued
OpenAI sells ChatGPT plans only in its supported countries and regions, and the card must be issued by a bank in one of them. Payments can be declined if either you or your card's bank is outside the list. Mainland China and Hong Kong, for example, are not on it (checked October 27, 2026).
A VPN doesn't change where your card was issued, and OpenAI recommends switching VPNs off during the bank check. If the issuing bank is outside the list, no setting on your side will make that card work.
Billing address, debit and prepaid cards
A billing address or postal code that doesn't match your bank's records is one of the checks OpenAI lists first. Use the address on your card statement, not your delivery address.
OpenAI's help center only rules out prepaid cards for API credits; it doesn't say prepaid cards are refused for ChatGPT plans. In practice debit, prepaid and virtual cards often come with online, international or recurring payments switched off, or without 3D Secure, so check those settings with the issuer before you blame OpenAI.
Subscribe through the App Store or Google Play instead
If the web checkout keeps declining your card, you can upgrade inside the ChatGPT app on iPhone or Android, where the app is available. Apple or Google then bills the subscription with the payment method or balance on your Apple ID or Google account, and you manage and cancel it there. The in-app price can differ from the web price.
Don't end up paying twice. Each platform bills separately, so cancel an existing subscription on the platform where you started it before you subscribe on another. If the app says in-app purchases are unavailable, try again later.
When no official route works: Pay2GPT
If none of the above works, or you simply don't have a card OpenAI accepts, Pay2GPT is an independent top-up service, not affiliated with OpenAI. You pay by card, Alipay, or crypto such as USDT and USDC, and Plus is activated on your own ChatGPT account. WeChat Pay isn't available.
No password or verification code is needed at any point. You paste the Session text on your own order page, and it is not stored in the database. It is used only to activate that order, and logging out of all devices in ChatGPT ends it. If the plan can't be activated, the full amount is refunded the way you paid.
Be realistic about two things. A card your bank blocks for OpenAI may be blocked here too, so Alipay or USDT is the more reliable choice. And if one of the fixes above works, paying OpenAI directly is cheaper; Plus costs $21.90 here.

FAQ
Why is my card declined by OpenAI when it works everywhere else? Your bank may treat the payment as an international online charge and block it, or the 3D Secure check didn't finish. OpenAI usually doesn't receive the detailed reason, so your bank is the one that can tell you.
Will a VPN fix a declined payment? No. Both you and your card's bank need to be in a supported country, and OpenAI suggests turning VPNs off while the bank verifies the payment.
My renewal failed. What now? Update the payment method in ChatGPT under Settings → Billing, check the card hasn't expired and has funds, and ask your bank whether it blocked the charge.
Can I pay through the App Store if the website declines my card? Yes, where the ChatGPT app is available. Apple or Google bills it; cancel any subscription on another platform first so you aren't charged twice.
Can I pay Pay2GPT with WeChat Pay? No. Card, Alipay and crypto (USDT, USDC and others) are accepted.
Four things we promise
- No passwordWe never ask for your password or verification code. You paste the Session only on your own order page.
- Session not stored in the databaseThe Session is used only to activate this order and is not stored in the database. Logging out of all devices in ChatGPT revokes it.
- Full refund if it can't be activatedIf we can't activate your plan, the full amount goes back to the way you paid.
- Lost within 30 days? Restored freeIf the plan stops working within 30 days of activation for reasons not on your side, we restore it free or refund the remaining days.
Problems caused by your own account, such as sharing or reselling it, are not covered; the Terms of Service decide. Terms of Service →
